From Self-Serving Abundance to Bondage: How Moral Decay Replaces Freedom (3)

The Fragile Chain of Freedom and the Fall of the Virtuous Citizen

In the lifecycle of nations described in the “Fragile Chain of Freedom,” freedom is not a permanent state but a delicate inheritance—easily lost when future generations fail to embody its moral prerequisites. Historically, freedom was born from courage, sustained by virtue, and secured through moral clarity. However, once a generation tastes prolonged abundance without the character forged by struggle, that abundance becomes self-serving. Men and women trade responsibility for indulgence.

“Men of selfishness, pleasure, and greed replace the builders of virtue.”

This generation increasingly populates national and local institutions—governments, churches, schools, and families—with individuals seeking self-preservation and privilege rather than public service or sacrificial stewardship.

Apathy and Moral Erosion: Stage 4 of Kohlberg’s Moral Development

According to Lawrence Kohlberg, moral development moves from external conformity (Stages 1-4) to internal principles (Stages 5-6). Stage 4, the “Law and Order” stage, is focused on obeying laws, preserving the status quo, and doing one’s “duty” to society.

But when society itself is unjust, Stage 4 morality becomes a trap. Citizens blindly follow rules, defend corrupted authority, and reject those who question the system.

Those stuck in Stage 4 become apathetic defenders of the failing culture. They mock reformers, label dissidents as radicals, and weaponize “order” to protect systemic decay.

“It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.” — Jiddu Krishnamurti

Stage 6: The Conscience of the Free

In contrast, Stage 6 represents the highest level of moral reasoning. These individuals act from universal ethical principles—justice, liberty, truth—even if it conflicts with unjust laws or corrupt institutions. This is the morality of Christ, Socrates, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr.

These are the men and women that free societies depend upon—those willing to endure mockery, punishment, or death rather than comply with evil. They don’t preserve institutions; they reform or replace them.

How Corrupt Citizens Treat Each Other

In a society dominated by self-serving abundance and apathetic compliance, relationships become exploitative, superficial, and fear-driven:

  • In churches: Spiritual leaders pursue influence and image, not truth. Congregants prefer feel-good messages over repentance or responsibility.
  • In education: Teachers are pressured to teach conformity, not critical thinking. Students are taught what to think, not how to think.
  • In politics: Voters seek benefits, not duties. Politicians sell promises instead of moral vision.
  • In families: Discipline becomes abuse or is abandoned altogether. Children are not raised; they are distracted.

The people who dominate these spaces often punish integrity and reward flattery or compliance.

The Descent Back Into Bondage

As self-serving abundance gives way to apathetic compliance, the chain of freedom breaks. Entitlement becomes the new virtue, cowardice the new normal. The institutions no longer function for liberty or truth, but for control, compliance, and survival.

Eventually, the people become so morally and emotionally fragile that they submit to bondage—debt, surveillance, addiction, isolation—thinking it is freedom.

“They trade their birthright for comfort, their liberty for pleasure, and their voice for safety.”

The Way Forward: Rebuilding from Stage 6

If America—and the West—are to restore freedom, it will not come through elections alone or reforms from within. It will come through:

  • Raising men and women of character, not convenience.
  • Uprooting idols of consumption and conformity.
  • Restoring Stage 6 morality in homes, churches, and schools.

We must be willing to live—and if needed, suffer—for universal truth, not the illusion of safety.
